Shadow of the Colossus

Beat Shadow of the Colossus this weekend. Fantastic game. Absolutely a work of art. The ending is extremely stunning, cited as the 4th best moment in gaming by gamepro.com.

4. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2): Epic in design and flawless in execution, Shadow of the Colossus is a rare gem amongst pebbles. If slaying 16 giants wasn’t cool enough for you, the ending was quite a surprise as the colossal deity takes control of your body and transforms you into a devastating behemoth of destruction.

Of course, the natural off-topic question is “What is the first three?”.

  1. Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation): Aeris is killed by Sepiroth in one of the most heartbreaking scenes ever in a video game.
  2. Halo (Xbox): Surviving the last level of the original Halo, The Maw, was one of the most climactic experiences in modern gaming.
  3. Metroid (NES): You beat the Mother Brain, race through the tunnels, and when you reach the surface of the planet…blammo!

Can’t agree completely but whatever. Shadow of the Colossus was a great experience. Was really cheap as it’s been out since 2005. Good stuff.

I’m with ya on that…I don’t completely agree that the first 3 items are the best moments.

I do, however agree that SotC is a work of art, in a literal sense. It is superb.

Did you play any of SotC? I agree that it’s an interactive art piece. Ico came in which I guess is the original (SotC was a prequel) and everyone is all nuts about Ico as well. Haven’t started it yet. Just started MGS3, and I mean just started it.

I keep forgetting that you have a PS2. You do right? Or is it Edgar the one who has never owned “the platform of platforms”. That still kills me. I look at all these titles he’d dig like Valkyrie Profile 2 .. come on it’s about goddamn Viking Mythology! Of course it’s one of those lengthy B-rated RPGs. So it might have good subject matter but lack execution?

Meh. Then that means getting a dated PS2 slim or *shudder* buying into the unrealized PS3 thingy.

Neither of us has owned the mainstay of gaming, the PS2. I just know from watching video, watching reviews, reading the lead designer’s post-mortem that the game is a work of art (like Ico).
