Cloud, a student game project

cloudgamebg

Student game project called Cloud. Free, for Windows. Incredibly interesting looking. Very original music, sound, gameplay.

Very simple it seems but absolutely polished for a university project.

I love the character model, the white robes. Very ethereal and airy. Reminds me of Black and White 2. When the rain starts in the video, very neat.

I don’t think thats an original piece of music – maybe a variation on a theme of something but it sounded familiar. Twas very nice though – I agree it was well composed and well concieved in general let alone for a student project.

Goes to show you (hic) that the best and most creative new material in “interactive entertainment” comes from indie dev’s and students who don’t have to suffer under the burdens of what corporate entities determine to be “targeted to their key demographic” etc etc. I’m sure you probably agree but I call you out anyway.

Absolutely! W/o even looking at the link, I whole-heartedly agree that games that are art (i.e. not just a game, but rather interactive art) come from folk who are not worried about making money on the damn thing.

A game developing or game publishing company has to make money to survive. Money is made by creating/publishing games that the company is fairly certain will sell well. That gamble is determined by previous titles of the same genre/kind. This creates a sort of “inbreeding” in the industry. It’s why all art goes through phases. Someone does something different and it’s a hit. Then everyone else copies (in some form) that hit until the market is flooded with derivitive copy-cats. It takes someone not concerned about making a profit to create the next big thing.
